As the new year approached, I made a decision to take a break from alcohol. Not for weight loss, but simply to see how I'd feel without it in the mix. I'd done Dry January before without seeing much change on the scales, so I didn't expect much this time either. But surprisingly, the numbers started to shift.


I'm all about balance. With an active lifestyle, regular exercise, and a healthy diet, I never considered those few glasses of wine on a Saturday night to be that significant. It was a small pleasure, a moment to unwind and enjoy. However, it turns out that those hidden calories were accumulating more than I had realized.


It's interesting how our relationship with alcohol differs from our approach to food. Despite being well aware of the calories in a glass of wine, I'd often overlook it and indulge anyway. Yet, if you offered me a Mars Bar, for example, I'd think twice. Taking a break from alcohol made me confront this difference. And without that glass of wine, I also noticed a decrease in mindless snacking and the impulse to 'soak up the alcohol' with unhealthy foods. It's crazy to think how deeply ingrained these habits can be, even when we understand their consequences.


Now, I'm not saying everyone should give up alcohol. It's a personal choice. But if weight loss is your goal and alcohol is part of your routine, it's worth considering. Maybe track those hidden calories for a while or take a break like I did. You might be surprised at the outcome.


Reflecting on my own weight loss journey, and all the years I spent feeling uncomfortable in my own skin, I can't help but wonder how things might have been different if I had made this simple change sooner. It's surprising how such a small adjustment could have such a significant impact.


For me, it's been an eye-opening journey - one that's reminded me that even the smallest changes can have a big impact on our health and well-being. So if you're feeling stuck on your weight loss journey or trying to lose a few pounds ready for your summer holiday, then cutting alcohol could be worth a try.
